How to Plan a Kashmir Houseboat Stay on Dal Lake

By Flyocat Travel Team

Choosing a houseboat, what a shikara transfer involves and the months the lake is at its best.

A houseboat on Dal Lake is the part of a Kashmir trip people remember, but the experience varies enormously between boats. Knowing what to ask before you book is the difference between a quiet morning on the water and a noisy one beside the main ghat.

1. Position matters more than category

Boats moored away from the main boulevard are quieter and have better views across the water. A simpler boat in a good position usually beats a grander one parked beside the road.

2. Understand the shikara transfer

You reach the boat by shikara, the small paddled boat that also serves as your transport while you stay. Confirm whether transfers are included and how late they run before you arrive.

3. Ask what meals cover

Many houseboats include meals cooked on board, which is often the best food you will eat in the valley. Check what is covered so the bill at the end holds no surprises.

4. Pack for cold mornings

Even outside winter the air over the water is cold at dawn, which is also the best time to be out on it. A warm layer makes the early shikara ride far more enjoyable.

5. Pick your season deliberately

Spring brings the gardens and blossom, summer is mild and green, and winter turns the valley quiet and snowbound. Each is a different trip, so choose for the one you actually want.
