A Complete Guide to Agra

Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, ticket queues and what else is worth seeing before you move on.

Most people give Agra half a day, and the half they choose decides the trip. Sunrise at the Taj is a genuinely different experience from the middle of the morning.

1. Go at opening

The first hour is quieter, cooler and far better lit than the rest of the day. It is the single most useful decision in an Agra itinerary.

2. Sort tickets in advance

Buying ahead saves a queue at the one time of day when the queue costs you the light. Check current entry rules before you go.

3. The fort deserves the afternoon

Agra Fort is substantial in its own right and far less crowded. It also gives you the Taj from a distance across the river.

4. Cross the river for the other view

The gardens on the opposite bank give the view most people have never seen. Late afternoon is the time for it.

5. One night is usually enough

An overnight stay buys you sunrise, which is the whole point. Beyond that, most travellers are ready to move on.
