A Complete Guide to Amritsar
By Flyocat Travel Team
Visiting the Golden Temple respectfully, the border ceremony timings and where to eat nearby.
Amritsar is a short stop that most people wish they had given another night. The temple is the reason to come, and it is a different place at different hours.
1. Visit the temple more than once
Early morning and late evening are completely different experiences, and both are better than the middle of the day. Staying nearby makes that easy.
2. Know the basics before you go in
Heads are covered, shoes are left outside and the pace is slow. Knowing that in advance makes the visit far more comfortable.
3. Eat at the community kitchen
The langar serves anyone who sits down, and seeing the scale of it is part of understanding the place. Join the queue rather than observing it.
4. Plan the border ceremony as an afternoon
The ceremony at the border takes most of an afternoon once travel and seating are counted. Treat it as the day's main event, not an add-on.
5. One or two nights is enough
The city is compact and the main sights are close together. Two nights lets you see the temple at both ends of the day without rushing.
