A Complete Guide to Goa

North versus south, when the beaches are quiet, and how many days a Goa break really needs.

Goa is really two destinations sharing a name. Picking the wrong half for what you want is the most common way a Goa trip disappoints, and it is easily avoided.

1. North for energy, south for quiet

The north has the markets, the nightlife and the crowds; the south has long empty sand and very little else. Many travellers split a week between the two.

2. Stay inland for a different trip

The spice plantations, old churches and river villages inland are a short drive from the coast and almost always quieter than the beaches.

3. Time it around the season

The beach shacks appear and disappear with the season, and the coast feels entirely different once they are gone. Check what will actually be open when you travel.

4. Rent transport on arrival

Beaches are spread out and taxis between them add up quickly. Arranging your own transport changes how much of the coast you actually see.

5. Four or five nights is the sweet spot

Two nights is not enough to slow down and a fortnight is more than most beaches can hold your attention. Four or five nights suits a first visit well.
