Jodhpur is one of the most compact stops in Rajasthan, which makes it easy to underestimate. The fort and the old town below it comfortably fill two days.
1. The fort is the whole morning
Mehrangarh is larger and better presented than most forts in the state. Going at opening gives you the ramparts before the heat arrives.
2. Walk the blue lanes
The old town below the fort is a maze and getting lost in it is the point. Mornings are quieter and the light is better.
3. Look down, then look up
Seeing the fort from the town and the town from the fort are two different experiences. Build both into the stay.
4. Pair it with the desert
The roads west lead into the desert, which makes Jodhpur the natural staging point for a night out on the dunes.
5. Two nights is the right length
One night means seeing the fort and leaving. Two lets you spend an unhurried morning in the lanes as well.
