A Complete Guide to Kerala
By Flyocat Travel Team
Backwaters, hill stations and beaches — how to combine them without spending the trip in transit.
Kerala's three landscapes sit close enough together to combine in a single trip, which is exactly why people overpack the itinerary. Three bases over a week is comfortable; five is not.
1. Run the route in one direction
Hills, backwaters and coast line up geographically, so moving through them in order saves hours of backtracking over the week.
2. Give the hills two nights
The tea country needs a full day to be worth the climb up to it. Arriving in the afternoon and leaving the next morning wastes the drive.
3. One night on the water
A houseboat night covers the best of the backwaters. Add a canoe trip rather than a second night if you want to see more than the main channels.
4. Finish on the coast
Ending at the beach means the slowest part of the trip comes last, when you most want it. It also keeps you close to an airport.
5. Avoid the heaviest monsoon
The rain is spectacular but limits time outdoors across all three landscapes. The drier months suit a first visit far better.
