A Complete Guide to Manali
By Flyocat Travel Team
Snow season, road conditions and the day trips worth building into a Himachal itinerary.
Manali works as both a base and a stop on a longer Himachal route. What you can actually do there depends almost entirely on the season and the state of the high passes.
1. Decide whether you want snow
Winter brings snow to the town itself but closes the high passes beyond it. Summer opens the roads north but means no snow at valley level.
2. Stay in old Manali or further out
The main town is busy and built up. Old Manali and the villages across the river are quieter and only a short distance away.
3. Check the passes before planning
The routes north over the high passes open and close with the season and the weather. Any itinerary that depends on them needs a fallback.
4. Build in the side valleys
The valleys branching off the main road are where the walking is. A day in one of them is usually better than another day in town.
5. Allow a long travel day
However you arrive, the last stretch is mountain road. Treating arrival and departure as full travel days keeps the rest of the trip relaxed.
