A Complete Guide to Meghalaya

Living root bridges, waterfalls and rain patterns, and the best base for exploring the highlands.

Meghalaya is defined by water, and the rain that makes the waterfalls spectacular also decides what you can reach. Timing and a sensible base make the difference.

1. The root bridges need a walk

The best-known bridges involve long staircases down and back up again. Treat them as a day's hiking rather than a photo stop.

2. Base south of Shillong

Staying closer to the southern escarpment cuts hours of driving off the days you want to spend walking. Shillong works better as an arrival stop.

3. Waterfalls peak with the rain

The falls are at their most dramatic during and just after the wet months, which is also when visibility is worst. Just after the rains is the usual compromise.

4. Allow for slow roads

Distances are short and journeys are long. Planning two things in a day usually works; planning four does not.

5. Pack for wet ground

Even outside the rain the paths stay damp and the rock is slick. Grip matters more than waterproofing on most of these walks.
