A Complete Guide to the Andaman Islands

Ferry timings between islands, snorkelling spots and how long to give each stop on the map.

Island-hopping in the Andamans is governed by the ferry schedule, not by distance. Build the itinerary around sailings first and everything else falls into place.

1. Book ferries before anything else

Sailings between the main islands are limited and fill up in season. Hotels can be changed far more easily than a crossing can.

2. Give each island two nights

A single night means arriving, sleeping and leaving on the next boat. Two nights gives you one full day actually on the island.

3. Snorkelling and diving are different plans

The best snorkelling is reachable from shore in places; diving needs a day booked around it. Decide which you want before choosing where to stay.

4. Expect limited connectivity

Mobile data is patchy away from the main island and cash is still useful. Sorting both out before you leave the capital saves hassle.

5. Travel in the calmer season

Sea conditions decide whether crossings and dive trips actually run. The calmer months are worth planning around for both.
